Inverted Nipple Correction

Inverted nipples are a relatively common problem but can nethertheless cause considerable anxiety and upset; in some cases patients may have suppressed this for many years and it can be a source of great emotion once the correction has occurred. Inverted nipples usually occur around puberty but can become more significant with repeated pregnancies and breast feeding. They occur due to shortened breast milk ducts (due to an overproduction of shortened collagen fibres). Interestingly some patients will live with this problem for many years and then present to Mr Banwell even when their children may be grown up and the successful correction can then very multiple benefits in psychological wellbeing and happiness .

CORRECTION OF INVERTED NIPPLES

Correction may be achieved using both non-surgical and surgical means. Most ladies would have tried proprietary methods available to improve inverted nipples (eg. nippelette)  but if these are unsuccessful then consultation with a plastic surgeon may be indicated. A variety of surgical techniques may be employed most of which are at the cost of cutting the milk ducts. Mr Banwell will discuss the procedure most appropriate for you.

TECHNIQUE OF INVERTED NIPPLE CORRECTION

The procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic in an outpatient setting and takes around an hour and a half. The worst part of the procedure is the local anaesthetic injection which can be a tad painful! After this you will only feel touch and sensation but no pain. Sutures are used to repair the wounds including a suspension suture and sponge dressing to hold the nipple out. Recurrence can occur so the operation may sometimes need to be repeated. rarely more advanced dermal flap procedures may be employed.

COST OF INVERTED NIPPLE CORRECTION

Mr Banwell’s team would be happy to provide an all-inclusive package price for this surgery. Please note that prices and costs of inverted nipple correction  may vary depending on the institution/clinic chosen. Essentially there is a surgical fee and a hospital/clinic fee but the hospital fee can vary. Follow up from Mr Banwell is included in the package price. In isolation the procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic but it can also be performed in combination with other procedures whilst under a general anaesthetic.

BRAS & GARMENTS

Mr Banwell recommends the surgery be performed under local anaesthesia although some patient elect to have this performed under general anaesthesia undertaken by a specialist anaesthetist.

The procedure is relatively minor in terms of recovery and most ladies on average are able to return to the activities of daily living immediately. The sutures used need to be removed at 2 weeks. Sometimes a small wire is inserted; when this technique is used, it too needs to be removed at 2 weeks. A small dressing is applied and this will be removed at one week at the first post-operative visit.
