Breast Reduction

Reduction Mammaplasty

Surgical Indications

The main reasons for breast reduction are:

  • To reduce the size of breasts to improve posture, and back, neck and shoulder pain.
  • To improve self-confidence and self esteem.
  • To allow more unrestricted activity.
  • To raise and repair the position of downward pointing nipples and areolars.
  • To reduce the likelihood of rashes forming in the folds underneath the breasts.

Liposuction Indications for Breast Reduction

Liposuction is a form of breast reduction which can be indicated in young women and teenagers who only require approximately one cup size reduction in breast volume, and have a moderate amount of fat within their breast. The process relies on the fact that skin following liposuction and a reduction in breast volume will naturally retract to a more suitable size and the nipple position may also rise to a more appropriate level. Only selected patients though are suitable for this procedure.

BRAS & GARMENTS

Surgeons like Mr Banwell recommend having a general anaesthetic undertaken by a specialist anaesthetist. The operation for reducing the breast is usually performed with the assumption of an overnight stay.

We generally like to see you at least twice prior to your surgery, although Mr Banwell welcomes and encourages you to visit as many times as you require, to give you support, offer tips, and allay any concerns you may have about your surgery, and at the same time, confirm the size, look, expected outcome and requirements you are trying to achieve. It is vital that you are fully informed of what the procedure involves and discuss the potential risks and alternatives.

After the operation there are no stitches to remove as they are all internal. The aftercare will consist of having a hospital nurse or administrative staff member contact you after the operation to ensure that you have no problems or complications during your convalescence. You are generally in hospital 1-2 nights. There will be post-op visits at one week, then at two & six weeks and at 6 months. A crop-top/ athletic bra is to be worn day and night for six weeks. We recommend no driving for two weeks post-operatively and no rigorous exercise for six weeks. At your first post-op visit we will discuss the best way to achieve the optimum scar result.

Mr Paul Banwell will discuss with you how much breast tissue you would like removed and what cup size ideally you would like to be after the operation. Of course there can be no exact guarantee as to what cup size the breasts will be after the operation and he will make it as close to this size as possible.

There are both general and specific risks and Mr Banwell will talk to you in detail regarding these. General risks include bruising and swelling, bleeding, wound infection, problems with general anaesthetics and it is not scarless, with abnormal scarring and keloid scarring, and blood clots in the legs and lungs. The specific risks of breast reduction for a woman include loss of sensation to the breast skin or nipple, bottoming out of the breast, interference with breast-feeding, continued neck, back and shoulder pain, fat necrosis or skin loss, wound breakdown and haematoma, asymmetry, nipples size difference, asymmetry in nipple heights and delayed wound healing.

Mr Banwell gave all the facts about the operations (positives and negatives). The results and thorough aftercare exceeded my expectations. Mr Banwell had by far the best experience and training for the procedure I needed; I was thrilled with the results. I was very pleased with everything. I was looked after by an amazing nurse and the results definitely made it worthwhile.

The consultation was conducted quickly, professionally but Mr Banwell also made me feel as if any question I may have wouldn’t not be too small or insignificant for him to take the time to answer. He left me feeling fully informed with both the pros and cons of any form of elective surgery but also that my worries were normal and that he would be able to assist me with my desired outcomes. His team were caring and professional making me feel that they were actually interested and were able to accommodate my dates when making the initial consultation booking. Prompt returning of calls, flexibility in booking of appointments friendliness, informative, caring and professional from the initial telephone call, the surgery, follow up appointments right through to my final appointment made me feel that my care, personal views and worries were important to them at all times. You can trust him to always be honest with you about the possible problems and outcomes. Overall experience with Mr Banwell and his team? Amazing! I just wish I’d not waited so many years to have this procedure done; I have my life back and it’s amazing to be able to walk into any shop and buy clothes that fit in my actual size and not 5 dress sizes larger just to fit my bust in. With the Upper Blepharoplasty everyone in my family says that I now look so much brighter and not tired, others I meet just tell me I look really great and ask if I’ve just had a holiday. Mr Banwell Thank You for all that you did for me.

Dear Mr Banwell I am writing to thank you, Kim and the rest of the lovely staff at the McIndoe. I was very nervous when I first met you, about having surgery but realised that it was a necessary evil. I need not have been worried, as from our initial consultation to surgery to full recovery, you have all been amazing.  You have changed my life – for the first time ever I have had some photos taken of me and my children. I stand taller and feel so much happier with life. I have even started my own business. I never realised that it would have had such a profound effect – and it didn’t hurt!! Thank you again.  I wish you and your team lots of health, luck and happiness.

Pamela C.

After deciding to go down the surgery route I contact Mr Banwell’s team and was dealt with quickly and efficiently but most of all everyone was so friendly and helpful which put me at ease. The care from start to finish and still on-going was 110% and everyone who I dealt with was fantastic. Mr Banwell was always professional and friendly and put me at ease from the very beginning. I am so pleased with my results and putting myself in Mr Banwell’s care was the best thing I could have done. It has completely changed my life and I can’t thank you all enough. I have already recommended you to my aunty! Thanks again.
