What causes moles?

Moles are typically small, coloured spots found on all skin types. Most people have them and they’re usually nothing to worry about unless they change in size, shape or colour.

Most moles are harmless. Harmless moles are generally round or oval-shaped, with a smooth edge.

A mole can be flat or raised and may feel smooth or rough. Sometimes they may have hair growing from them. Moles are usually darker on brown or black skin.

It’s normal for:

  • to have several moles regardless of your skin conditions
  • babies to be born with moles
  • new moles to appear – especially in children and teenagers
  • moles to fade or disappear as you get older
  • moles to get slightly darker during pregnancy
  • to frequently undergo the easily accessible mole checks or mole mapping

Why get a mole, skin tags or skin lesions removed?

Moles can affect your appearance and are cosmetically unacceptable, but they can also be a nuisance that affects self confidence.

Many get cut during shaving, bleed, or get caught on clothing, necklaces and combs and need to undergo a treatment removal procedure.

Some can be ‘beauty spots’, but others may have a negative effect, being unattractive or a cause for concern.

The same need for removal may also apply to acne, cysts, papillomas, skin blemishes, skin cells, skin tags, small birthmarks, raised moles, warts, and other lumps and bumps on the skin.

Techniques for mole and skin tag removal

Mr Banwell offers a range of different treatment options at the clinic.

Mole removal on the face and neck are the most responsive to clinical techniques. Other body areas are more likely to leave a small patch of pale skin after treatment, sometimes slightly red for a few weeks, and in some cases a small scar or wound.

Of course, all moles are examined by Mr Banwell and his care quality commission who will identify and diagnose each case before treatments.

Upon removal, if there are any concerns that the moles are not completely benign (harmless growths) then sampling of tissue may be recommended by the pathologist. Early detection is the best way to keep on top of your medical history and is completely harmless.

In these cases we like to be certain the mole is not possibly cancerous or possible side effects from the proposed treatment.

Mole shave excision

Doctors remove most moles quickly and simply in one session without the need to cut the skin or have stitches (otherwise known as shave excision) however sometimes, stitches may be required. Mr Paul Banwell, consultant plastic surgeon and expert skin specialist, uses both methods to remove moles, birthmarks and skin tags.

These small procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic (with you awake) but in some cases sedation or a general anaesthetic might be preferred.

Mole excision biopsy

Depending on individual needs, Mr Banwell may decide to remove the whole mole (this process is termed an excision biopsy).

In most cases the moles will be sent away to the laboratory the same day as treatment for analysis unless the surgical removal is purely for cosmetic reasons.

You are in good hands as Mr Banwell has extensive experience and performs hundreds of removal procedures every year and is the founder and head of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Unit (MASCU) in East Grinstead.

Mr Banwell has clinics for mole removal, surgical mole excision and skin tag removal in Brighton, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Tunbridge Wells, Worthing and London.

Mr Banwell removes hairy moles, unsightly moles, skin tags, warts, warty lesions, keratotic lesions, skin cancers, basal cell carcinomas (BCC), squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and malignant melanomas (MM).

Anaesthetics at our mole removal clinic, Brighton

Mole removal is usually performed under local anaesthetic where the skin is numbed with a needle and you are awake. This is a quick and easy procedure with a short recovery period and the full details will be thoroughly explained to you. (Just like at the dentist, where local anaesthetic wears off after a few hours.)

How long before daily activities may be resumed?

Aftercare post-removal is an important stage of all procedures and treatment. Once treated, you will be able to return to sedentary activity (eg an office job) the next day, but you should avoid all strenuous or physical activity for a minimum of 2 weeks.

Stitches are removed 1-2 weeks after surgery. If your lump was shaved off, then you will need to leave the dressing and wait till it falls off in its own time.

You can drive the following day if you are careful. If the operation was on your face or head, it is imperative not to bend down or lift things for at least 48-hours after the operation.

This is to minimise the risk of bleeding (for example, tying shoe laces, bring your foot up whilst sitting, rather than bending down to your shoe).

It is also a good idea to use a couple of pillows when sleeping to avoid laying flat until the consultant feels the targeted area is completely healed. This helps minimise swelling and there may be redness and scarring. All patients must carefully adhere to all aftercare advice after removal, regardless of any individual’s treatment, in order to minimise risk.

The care was excellent both pre and post operatively. During my stay at the hospital I knew exactly what to expect and when, which was most reassuring. The outcome is exactly as I’d have hoped. My eyes look less heavy and it’s as if they have more space to open! I’d never heard of the procedure before seeing Mr Banwell but I knew that something needed doing, and I’m absolutely delighted with the results.

Janet T.

I liked what was written about Mr Banwell and that he was a family man with lots of experience specialising in the operation I wanted. All my expectations were met and at my consultations any worried and questions were answered. I felt Mr Banwell took away any worries I had and has a very kind manner. I would recommend Mr Banwell and say that you are in a high standard of care and well looked after. I had an enjoyable time and was looked after in every way and Mr Banwell and his team are professional in every way.

Lynn A.

Mr Banwell explained the details of my procedures in a professional and sensitive manner. He took the time to put me at ease and answer all my questions in a way that I could understand. Each step of my treatment from the initial consultation through to its conclusion was supported by professional who with their support enables me to have an extremely smooth journey through my procedures. For the first time in my adult life I am happy in my own skin. I would recommend Mr Banwell to anyone who has been thinking of cosmetic surgery in a heartbeat. Through his skill and understanding of the female body, he carries out his profession with the utmost care and consideration.

Susan G.

Thank you so much for your surgery and your fantastic caring and positive attitude which makes so much difference for patients, me included!

Mike S.

I decided to have treatment with Mr Banwell due to recommendations from other healthcare professionals and knowledge of his surgical skills. My expectations were for reduced ptosis and fuller breasts, my expectations were exceeded. Mr Banwell provided me with honest and realistic expectations for my clinical outcome. I found it a very positive experience. I was originally very apprehensive about undertaking a cosmetic procedure and questioned the need for proceeding, but following my breast augmentation I have much more self confidence and I realise that I’d underestimated how much the ptosis had been getting to me. The outcome has been fantastic! Thank you.

Sharon B.

Mr Banwell provides an excellent service in pre-operation information, as well as total expertise and attention to detail in surgery. He was very informative and helpful after care.  I received excellent and sympathetic nursing care and anaesthetist. Mr Banwell has a very helpful practice manager and assistant.  My eyes have regained an ‘openness’ similar to my younger years. I no longer look tired.  I would highly recommend Mr Banwell to anyone considering cosmetic surgery.
